| | New project of Avdey Ter-Oganyan proceeds with method of appropriation, so characteristic of him. In the latest series of abstract paintings the artist pushes to the absurdity the once chosen strategy of “art about art”: the series present an interpretation of the his own works created 15 years ago.
In the beginning of 1990-s Avdey appeared in disguise of a provincial artist, who made copies of famous modernistic works (series “Pictures for Museum”). In the next series of works (“Abusive Painting”) he suggested a new interpretation of modernism, intruding abusive words into the museum masterpieces. The artist, keeping to his eternal love to modernism, continued searching for new objects for worship through copying and finally found them in his own artistic heritage.
In the latest project, as in previous ones, where author didn’t set the task of making literal copies but simply gave free interpretation of artistic language, Ter-Oganjan offers the interpretation of his own modernistic experiments of the end of 1980-s.
